Morgan Huff Finding Stride in Germany

Colorado Rush 05 Striker Competing this Spring with FFC Kaiserslautern

With ambitions of pursuing a professional soccer career, Morgan Huff eagerly seized the opportunity to experience playing in Europe. Recently, she was presented with a chance that she was determined to embrace.

Huff, a member of the Colorado Rush club born in 2005, is currently dedicating her spring season to the FFC Kaiserslautern U17 team. While the women’s team has previously signed players from Rush, this marks the first instance of inviting a youth player to join their ranks.

“The club reached out to Rush seeking assistance in their efforts to ascend to the highest tier of German youth soccer, and when they approached me about my interest, I was more than ready to accept,” Huff stated.

Although it took her a couple of weeks to acclimate to her new teammates, she swiftly developed rapport with them.

“Initially, I focused on training with the youth squad, but I later had the opportunity to engage in additional training sessions with the older girls, which proved immensely beneficial,” the striker noted.

“The transition was somewhat challenging at first, but I adapted and now feel significantly more comfortable. This experience is undoubtedly enhancing my soccer intelligence and enabling me to better comprehend team dynamics and the playing styles of others, allowing for easier adaptation.”

Huff has also had to familiarize herself with a different style of play.

“The approach here is considerably more adventurous compared to what we encounter in the U.S.,” she explained. “They push more players forward and rely on just one or two defenders at the back to counter opposing attacks. They encourage taking shots more frequently and driving at opponents. Individual efforts on the ball are highly valued, yet they still emphasize crossing the ball into the center, which aligns with our practices at home.”

Currently residing in an apartment provided by the club with her mother, Huff has found the language barrier to be somewhat challenging. Additionally, her first name—also the German word for “morning”—has led to some humorous situations.

“I am just beginning to grasp the fundamentals of German,” she admitted. “I’m striving to connect with my teammates, but I’ve occasionally heard what I thought was my name being mentioned and wondered what they were saying. Upon inquiring, I discovered they were simply discussing their activities that morning.”

Despite the language difficulties, she regards the experience as highly beneficial.

“Experiencing a country as a resident is distinctly different from merely visiting,” she observed. “We’ve had to learn how to navigate the public transportation system, which is quite different from what we’re accustomed to. Grocery shopping has also posed some challenges. However, these experiences will enhance my adaptability for future endeavors, especially if I end up playing abroad.”
