A License To Learn

While Rush Soccer remains committed to creating diverse pathways for player success on the field, it’s also opening up new avenues for its coaches to enhance their skills through specialized training.

One of these new opportunities comes through Rush Soccer’s collaboration with ATFA — the Asociación de Técnicos del Fútbol Argentino.

Juan Castellanos, Rush Union’s technical director from Atlanta, joined four other Rush coaches on a summer trip to Argentina, working toward either their B or C coaching licenses through the Menotti School. César Luis Menotti, the mastermind behind Argentina's 1978 World Cup victory, has been globally celebrated for over five decades for his innovative coaching methods.

Castellanos and his fellow coaches began with months of online coursework before heading to Argentina in June for a week of intensive in-person training.

The program went beyond classroom instruction, allowing coaches to observe and lead training sessions firsthand, adding practical insights to their educational experience.

“The level of expertise these coaches bring is incredible,” Castellanos shared. “We even worked alongside Fernando Signorini, who was Diego Maradona's fitness coach for 14 years. The depth of knowledge from every coach involved was remarkable—and the program was exceptionally well organized.”

In addition to immersing themselves in Argentinian culture, the highlight of the trip was a visit to two of Argentina's premier clubs, Racing Club and Boca Juniors.

“At Racing, we had discussions with various coaches and the directors of coaching,” Castellanos noted. “We visited twice, observing different training sessions and standing right on the sidelines to experience the drills firsthand.”

The Rush coaches also had the chance to watch Racing face off against River Plate over the weekend and took part in an exclusive training session at Boca Juniors.

Castellanos expressed that he would highly recommend the ATFA program to other Rush coaches aiming to advance their credentials and gain a fresh outlook on coaching techniques.

“The Menotti approach closely aligns with the core values of Rush Soccer, which benefits Rush coaches greatly,” Castellanos observed. “The whole experience was unforgettable. From the moment you step off the plane, you’re immersed in a nation where the passion and legacy of soccer are palpable.”

He shared that he highly recommends the ATFA program for Rush coaches looking to advance their qualifications and broaden their coaching perspective.

“It was truly enlightening and a bit grounding as we saw the intensity of training among their youth players compared to ours. It was incredibly valuable to engage openly with their instructors, discussing the unique challenges we each face in teaching the game. That exchange was really fulfilling.”
